Neutrogena & DermaNew Microdermabrasion Review

Neutrogena and DermaNew Microdermabrasion Systems

Lately I have been talking quite a bit about home microdermabrasion systems here on this website and also with my friends. For those of you not so familiar with microdermabrasion, it is a process of massaging away dead skin cells on the surface of our skin with tiny particles. By removing dead skin cells, it speeds up the process of our skin producing new living cells. This helps the skin become smoother. softer, and reduces the appearances fine lines, wrinkles, and the pore sizes.

What got me interested in microdermabrasion devices was after trying one of these devices at my friend’s house. After using it, my skin did feel a lot more smoother. The one she had was made by a Japanese company whose name that I can’t quite recall right now and had some trouble pronouncing correctly at the time. It was fairly expensive since it carried a price of over $200. I personally went with some more affordable microdermabrasion devices myself. I just recently purchased the Neutrogena healthy skin rejuvenator for only $30 and also ordered DermaNew’s microdermabrasion system for $70.

The Neturogena microdermabrasion system is sold in many places. I personally bought mine at Target and also seen it in a CVS advertisment. It is also sold online on many websites including Amazon.com . The one from DermaNew is sold in many different online stores as well.

Neutrogena Healthy Skin Rejuvenator

Neutrogena Healthy Skin Rejuvenator

I’ll first go over the microdermabrasion device from Neutrogena since I initially purchased it first. Rather then applying a cream, their device actually uses these one time use rejuvenating puffs. These puffs contains the cream and the tiny microscopic crystals packed inside them. They are initially dried, so you simply wet the puff and attach it to the device when using it.

After turning the device on, you massage the different areas of your face with the puff for a minute or two each. There is a high setting and a low setting on the microdermabrasion device. After you are the done, you rinse off your face and toss the old puff away. The next time you use the device you just apply a new puff. Neutrogena recommends using the device for around three times a week.

The entire kit from Neutrogena includes 12 rejuvenating puffs and also included the required 2 AA batteries. The device is very gentle and not intrusive. Although the device doesn’t state it is designed for sensitive skin, after using it a few times I had no problems with it.

My skin does feel a little smoother right after using it. On the back of the box, it also states that after using the device for 1 week, 88% of people had visible improvements in fine lines. After 4 weeks, 88% noticed a reduction in the apperance of wrinkles and age spots. After 8 weeks, 72% noticed improvements in the firmness of the skin.

DermaNew Microdermabrasion

DermaNew Microdermabrasion

The DermaNew system is another fairly popular microdemabrasion system at a good price. DermaNew is one of the earlier companies to make home microdermabrasion devices. As you can see from the picture, the device contains three different heads and two can be attached at a time. One is a facial foam applicator for microdermabrasion while the other is a facial pore cleansing brush used to help cleanse the skin. The third is a body applicator, which is used on other parts of the body with other DermaNew body cleansers and soaps. The device itself is water proof and can be used in the shower if you like. The two required AA batteries is also included. The cream included in the kit is also fairly good. It is formulated to be used on sensitive and normal skin types. It contains Corundum Crystals which works gently to polish and resurface the skin. There are also many antioxidants in the cream.

I like the design of the DermaNew device a little more. The tear dropped shapped applicator, makes it easier to use on certain areas of the face like around the nose and mouth. The included cream in the microdermabrasion system also feels to be of higher quality then the puffs used in the Neutrogena system.

The process is more or less the same as the Neutrogena device.  It is recommended to first cleanse your face before using DermaNew. You apply some cream onto the foam applicator head of the device. You also dot some of creme onto your forehead, nose, cheeks, and chin. You then just turn the device on and use it to massage the different areas of the face. After you are done, you use the deep pore cleansing brush to remove any crystal residue and rinse your face off. DermaNew also recommended to be used around two to three times a week.

As for the results, my skin also feels more smoother right after using the device. To me it felt to be more effective than the Neutrogena system. Also, I couldn’t really tell much difference between DermaNew and the expensive Japanese microdermabrasion system my friend had. However, her system did include more creams which was one reason for the higher price.

Conclusion

I would personally recommend both the DermaNew and Neutrogena Microdermabrasion systems. However, I personally like the one for DermaNew more and would be continuing to use it. I felt that the results after using DermaNew were a tad better than the one from Neutrogena. Also, DermaNew has been designed for those with sensitive skin like me in mind. The actual device from DermaNew also seemed to be more sturdy and better built. Granted, the saying you get what you pay for does hold true. With the Neutrogena Healthy Skin Rejuvenator at around $30, it is unreasonable to expect it to perform as well as DermaNew’s microdermrabasion system which costs $70. However, the $40 difference should be fairly insignificant for most people. Unless the price difference is a real issue, I would personally go with DermaNew for the closer to salon quality microdermabrasion.
